Treatment Overview

Our licensed clinicians use both Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in our treatment approach with patients.

CBT is used to treat disorders such as personality conditions and behavioral problems.  CBT has six phases:

  1. Assessment or psychological assessment;
  2. Reconceptualization;
  3. Skills acquisition;
  4. Skills consolidation and application training;
  5. Generalization and maintenance;
  6. Post-treatment assessment follow-up.

DBT is a set of coping skills to help people find balance in their lives.

The word “dialectical” refers to things that seem to be in conflict – yet both can be true at the same time.

For example:

Someone wants to be thin – but overeats

A person finds him/herself in constant debt – but yearns to be financially stable

Someone wants to be independent – yet is dependent on someone to an unhealthy degree

A person wants to be treated as an adult – but often acts rather childish

DBT Consists of Four Modules

Mindfulness – Participants learn how to focus on the present moment. There is an understanding that if one is not participating in what life brings now, experiences can pass us by.

Emotional Regulation – Group members learn how one can learn to live with the emotions they are feeling AND express them appropriately. It also helps with impulse control.

Interpersonal Effectiveness – Participants learn how to improve their interactions with other people while maintaining their own self esteem.

Distress Tolerance – Participants learn positive ways of handling stress including skills that can help calm an immediate crisis, and how to react appropriately to life’s occasional curve balls.

Patients also will have an opportunity to learn more about good sleep practices, proper nutrition and medication issues from PVBH professionals.
